NITA recently played host to the Cabinet Secretary for Trade, Industry and Cooperatives Hon. Adan Mohamed and his Cabinet counterpart for East African Community, Labour and Social Protection, and Hon. Phyllis Kandie who paid a courtesy call to the Director General of the National Industrial Training Authority, Mr Paul K. Kosgei at the Authority’s Headquarters on the 17th of January 2018. 

In attendance during the visit was Secretary of Administration Mr. Mwangi Chege [Ministry of EAC, Labour and Social Protection] as well as the Advisor for Textiles and Apparel, [Ministry of Trade, Industry and Cooperatives] Mr. Rajeev Arora who is the former Executive Director of the African Cotton and Textiles Industries Federation (ACTIF). Members of the National Industrial Training Board were also present to receive the dignitaries to the Authority.

Among the key issues discussed during the visit was reviving the textile industry in Kenya that was once a major employer. The NITA Textile Training Institute [NTTI] which is one of the Authority’s Industrial Training Centres [ITCs] where students are taught various skills such as dress making and apparel technology was an area of keen interest for the Cabinet Secretaries as they were taken through a guided tour of the facility led by the Director General, Director Industrial Training Mr. Stephen Ogenga as well as the NTTI Centre Manager, Mr. Festus Musyoki.

The Cabinet Secretaries were impressed with the facility’s advanced equipment and urged key industry players in the textile industry to form new synergies that will enable Kenya take its position once again as East Africa’s textile giant. 

While making their closing remarks the Cabinet Secretaries commended the Director General on the contribution the Authority is making in ensuring the preservation of the textile industry in the country, while pledging Government support to ensure the textile sector regains a solid footing in the country’s economy.
