IMPLEMENTATION OF RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING (RPL)

NITA is a key player in the implementation of Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) in the country. The RPL process enables persons to acquire formal qualifications that matches their knowledge and skills and thereby, contributing to improving their employ-ability, mobility and lifelong learning.

Over the years on-the-job training, informal apprenticeships and home care learning outcomes often do not come with a certificate of competency recognizing the knowledge, skills and experience acquired by such persons. Now, through RPL it is expected that persons in industry will acquire certification in these areas of trade. Recognition of these types of learning will result in broad benefits to the labour market, formal education and training, greater opportunities for broader development, access to jobs, career progression, fostered remuneration and generally promoted employment equity. RPL also poses greater benefits to employers as the employer is able to identify skills gaps in their organizations, identify appropriate training programme and reduce employee training time by minimizing duplication of learning.The ongoing push for skill certification aims to advance sustainable socioeconomic development by supporting growth of a trained workforce. Numerous nations are developing recognizable abilities obtained through modalities as they increasingly recognize the significance of in formal and non-formal.

NITA in collaboration with KNQA and ILO conducted a pilot assessment the process began with Awareness, Screening and Portfolio of Evidence Assessment which happened in Daddab and Garrisa county, where the RPL practitioner examines evidence submitted by the candidate against prescribed learning outcomes to determine the level the candidate shall be admitted for Assessment.

The Recognition of Prior Learning extended pilot roll out which entailed registration for RPL candidates for December 2022 Trade test. That occurred after filling the application form during screening, expression of interest on the grade to book, questions and answers to gauge which level to be placed and lastly supporting documents so as to proceed to the actual assessment then certification.
